In partnership with our subsidiaries, Vulindlela Holdings donates a wealth of time and resources to the community of Umbumbulu, the hometown of our founding director and his family.
Kwajabula High School Campus Refurbishment
KwaJabula High School is a co-ed school situated in Odidini in Umbumbulu, south-west of Durban. KwaJabula is a free education institution, relying on donations and community support to continue providing quality education to over 440 learners.
To assist them in their impressive efforts to educate the children of Odidini, Vulindlela conducted a complete refurbishment of the school campus between December 2018 and February 2019. This included repainting the entire school, renovating ceilings and window frames, fixing floors and windows, installing new gutters, and remodelling the driveway with concrete paving. To provide an environment more conducive to learning, this refurbishment also saw the installation of water taps and fountains, the conversion of an old classroom into a library, and the restoration of the school’s storm water drainage system.
We further installed 2 brand-new computer labs managed by AME Africa, a Vulindlela Holdings subsidiary, and built and furnished a new Administration Block featuring a boardroom, 4 HOD offices, 11 open plan work stations and a kitchenette.
Too often, students that come from rural areas such as Umbumbulu lack social interactive skills. This is a big decision-making factor for employers, and frequently hinders their career opportunities. Basic education in these areas have little to no focus on developing the social confidence of the youth.
With this in mind, the Vulindlela Holdings team spearheaded the Izimbali Zesizwe initiative. The aim of this programme is to assist students in the development of confidence and social skills which will benefit them far beyond the confines of the classroom, making them much more attractive to employers and allowing them to compete with students from top-tier South African schools.
This yearly programme for Grade 11 female learners is comprised of monthly interactive sessions focused on inspiring learners and exposing them to experiences that will broaden their horizons. Izimbali Zesizwe is facilitated by women within the Vulindlela group and includes guest speakers, literature reviews, role playing sessions and field trips.
Putello Primary School Art Centre
Putello is a lower primary school in Umbumbulu, about 5km from KwaJabula. Vulindlela Holdings built a 140m2 multipurpose art centre on the school premises for use as an art learning centre, a school hall and a community hall.
Vulindlela Holdings has identified the daily challenges faced by the local community clinic in Odidini, and have observed how this affects service delivery to the community at large.
We have taken it upon ourselves to assist the clinic by providing a donation towards improving the infrastructure of the clinic through building extensions, which we believe will go a long towards servicing Odidini and surrounding areas. The new building extension of just under 200m2 usable space consist of an emergency room, a Centralised Chronic Medicines Dispensing and Distribution office, two consulting rooms, a boardroom, a waiting area, ablution facilities, and a 12KVA generator. This new extension will be open for operation in March 2020.
